The National Parks and Reserves of Madagascar |

The protection of natural areas began under French rule in 1927 and has been extended by Madagascan governments since then. While 3% of the country was protected in 2003, there has been a target to increase that to 10%.
Protected areas in Madagascar fall into two main categories: Strict Nature Reserves and National Parks.
Strict Nature Reserves are usually reserved for scientific research - no public permitted.
You should also note that from time to time the names of reserves will change and so will their classification.

In addition to these there are numerous "Private reserves".
